Newark Lawn Mowing Cost · What $50/hr Per Person Actually Buys
Most "from $40" lawn quotes hide a 30-minute minimum and a $35 fuel fee. Ours do not. Here is what a Newark lawn mow actually costs at $50/hr per person — by yard size.
Brian Zalewski ·
A standard Newark front-and-back lawn — under 2,000 square feet of grass — runs about $50 to $100 with our crew. That is one or two crew-hours total. Here is the math, what is included, and how to know which tier yours is.
Three tiers, by square footage
- Small city yard (under 1,500 sq ft total grass) — $50. One crew member, one hour. Mow front, mow back, edge the sidewalk and driveway, trim along the fence, blow the clippings off the walk, bag and haul. Most rowhouse yards in Newark land here.
- Standard yard (1,500–4,000 sq ft) — $100. One crew member, two hours, or a two-person crew for one hour. Same scope, more square footage and usually more edge work.
- Big yard (4,000–10,000 sq ft) — $150–$300. Two-person crew, two to three hours. Includes detailed edging, hedge top trim, and bag-and-haul of the clippings.
Beyond 10,000 square feet we quote per visit instead of per hour — usually a four-person crew with a flat day rate. Send the address and a photo and we will write the day-rate quote on the spot.
What is included in every mow
- Mow — sharp blade, two-week mulching height, alternating pattern so the lawn does not lean.
- Edge — sidewalks, driveway, walkways, around mailbox post, around AC unit.
- Trim — fence line, around trees and shrubs, along the foundation.
- Cleanup — blow clippings off all hard surfaces, bag the grass, haul it.
- Weed quick-pass — dandelions and obvious bed weeds get pulled before mowing so the deck does not chop the seed-heads back into the lawn. More on the root-pull rule.
What bumps the price
- Tall grass. Anything over six inches is a two-pass mow — first pass at maximum height, second pass at the regular cutting height. Add 30 minutes for a small yard.
- Steep slope. Side hill that needs a push mower instead of the self-propelled. Slower, but no extra fee unless it doubles the time.
- Bagging only. If you do not want mulched clippings dropped, we bag everything and haul it. Adds about 20 minutes per yard.
- Recurring schedule. Weekly or bi-weekly is the same rate but you skip the "first visit" assessment time — it tends to land at the bottom of the tier.
What does not bump the price
No fuel fee. No "edge the sidewalk" upcharge. No bag-removal surcharge. No drive-time minimum. The slider on the homepage is the bill.
The flat-rate principle stays the same as our overall pricing rule — labor is fixed, the only pass-through is the dump fee on yard-waste hauls (Essex County transfer station, $0–$15 for a typical bag load).
How to book a mow
Pick "Lawn / yard care" at the booking form, choose 1 or 2 hours and the crew size that matches your tier above, and add a sentence in the notes — front + back, fence type, any gates, anything you want or do not want trimmed. We confirm by text within ten minutes and the crew is there in the slot you booked. Most Newark customers run a bi-weekly Saturday mow on a recurring schedule — same flat rate, same time slot every other Saturday.
One more line
If your yard has been left alone for two months, the first cut is a brush clearing, not a mow. We bring a string trimmer and clearing blade, knock the height down, then mow on a second visit a week later. Better lawn, longer term — same per-person, per-hour rate. Book a brush-clear slot and write "first cut, tall grass" in the notes.
