On-Call Snow Shoveling Newark · $50/hr Per Person Same Day

Newark gets 24 inches of snow a year on average. We run an on-call shoveling list — text the address, we are on a stoop within hours. Same flat rate, same flat hourly math.

Newark averages roughly 24 inches of snow per year across half a dozen storms (NWS New York). When it lands, it lands fast — and the city ordinance says you have to clear the sidewalk in front of your property within hours of the storm ending. We run an on-call list to make that easy.

How the on-call list works

  1. Sign up before the season — send your address and any access notes through the contact form. We add you to the priority list.
  2. The morning a storm ends, we text the on-call list with our route and an ETA window — usually within 4 hours of the snow stopping for nearby Newark addresses, longer for the farther reaches of the service area.
  3. You reply yes or no. If yes, the crew is there in the window. If no, no charge — you can opt out of any storm without losing your slot on the list.
  4. You pay the same flat rate$50/hr per person, 30-minute minimum on shoveling jobs (the only service where we drop the 1-hour minimum because most stoops are a 25-minute job).

What is included

  • Sidewalk and stoop — full width down to the pavement, not the half-job stripe most people leave.
  • Driveway clear — hand shovel for under 4 inches, snow blower for deeper jobs (we bring a 24-inch two-stage).
  • Walkway from sidewalk to door — full width, including any gate posts.
  • Salt or calcium chloride on slick spots — pet-friendly product on residential walks unless you tell us otherwise. EPA Safer Choice ice melt at cost.
  • Photo confirmation when finished — texted to your phone before we leave the address.

What we will not do, even on a snow day

We do not climb on the roof to clear snow. Roof snow is a licensed-trade or roofing-specialist job — slip risk plus structural damage if done wrong. We will hand off to a roofer the same morning.

Same boundary as the rest of our casual-labor scope. The ground we shovel; the roof we do not.

Pricing examples

  • Standard Newark rowhouse stoop + sidewalk — 30 minutes, one crew. $25 (the only sub-$50 service we run, on the snow-only minimum). Salt at cost.
  • Two-story house with driveway and walkway — 1 hour, one crew. $50.
  • Multi-unit building entrance, sidewalk, alley — 1.5–2 hours, two crew. $150–$200.
  • Property-manager portfolio (5+ buildings) — flat per-storm rate set in advance. Send the list of addresses and we write the schedule.

Why the on-call model instead of a contract

Most snow services sell a flat-fee contract for the season — you pay $400 in October whether it snows or not. Years like 2023, when Newark only got 2.4 inches all winter (National Weather Service, 2023), you eat the $400. Our on-call model means you only pay when we actually shovel. The math compounds in your favor on light winters.

The Newark sidewalk ordinance, in plain English

Newark Municipal Code §16:13-2 requires property owners to clear snow and ice from sidewalks abutting their property within 6 daylight hours of the storm ending (Newark Ordinance §16:13-2, 2023). Failure to clear runs $100 — $1,000 in fines plus liability exposure for slip-and-fall claims, which average $20,000 in medical-plus-settlement costs nationally per incident (National Floor Safety Institute, 2024). The on-call list keeps you ahead of both numbers.

How to get on the on-call list this year

Send your address, any access notes (locked gate, side entrance, parked car you cannot move), and your phone number through the contact form. We confirm in the same week. Same on-call rule applies for leaf-haul and post-storm gutter clears in the fall.
