Old Sofa Haul-Away from $200 · How Brick City Labor Prices It
Got an old sofa to get rid of? Most jobs land around $200 — two-person crew, pickup truck, dump fee included. Here is exactly what drives the price.
Brian Zalewski · ·updated
A typical Newark sofa haul-away with our crew runs as low as $200 all in. That is two people, the truck, the dump or thrift-shop drop, and a clean carry-out — no hourly creep, no surprise dump fee. Here is the breakdown so you know what drives the number.
What "$200 sofa haul" actually includes
- Two crew members — one person cannot reasonably move a real sofa down a Newark stoop without trashing the wall.
- Roughly two hours of labor — drive over, carry out, load, drop, sweep up.
- Pickup truck or work van — bed liner, straps, blankets so we do not chip your floor or banister.
- Drop-off fee — we route to a thrift shop or transfer station depending on condition. Couches in good shape go to Salvation Army or Savers; the rest go to the Essex County transfer station.
That is the math: 2 hours × 2 crew × $50/hr = $200 base. The dump fee for a single sofa to a transfer station is usually $0–$20 — included in the quote when relevant.
What bumps the price up
- Stairs. One-flight walk-out is the base. Two flights or a tight stairwell turn adds 30 minutes.
- Sectionals. A 4-piece sectional is two trips of the truck, two more loading cycles. Plan on $300–$400.
- Sleeper sofas. Heavy steel mechanism inside — same time, but you really want the two-person crew, not one.
- Disassembly. If we have to take legs off, separate cushions, or unscrew a recliner mechanism to get it through the doorway, that is 15–30 extra minutes.
- Add a chair, dresser, or mattress. Combine items in one trip — much cheaper than two separate hauls. We can usually fit a sofa + recliner + a couple boxes in one truck load. Add an appliance on the same trip and the math compounds in your favor.
What we will not do (and why)
If a piece of furniture is plainly hazardous — bedbug-infested, soaked in standing water, structurally collapsed — we will help you book a Newark city bulk pickup or a junk-removal company that can handle that load. We do not move biohazards. The honesty is part of the job.
The local market — what other haulers charge
Independent surveys of Newark + Essex County junk-removal pricing put the average single-sofa haul-away at $150 — $375 (Angi true cost survey, 2024), with national franchises like 1-800-GOT-JUNK reporting average residential haul jobs of $292 across the New York metro (1-800-GOT-JUNK Pricing Report, 2024). Our $200 anchor lands at the low end of that range because the math is hourly and transparent — not a "minimum truck-load fee" plus dump pass-through plus tip. The savings compound when you combine the sofa with one other item on the same trip; see the multi-item math under appliance haul-away.
How to book a sofa haul
Pick "Hauling" at the booking form, choose a 2-person crew, and add a sentence in the notes — sofa size, floor, building, any tight turns. We will reply with the exact quote and lock the slot with a $50 deposit. The rest gets paid the day of the job by Venmo, cash, or a Square invoice we email you.
